"A historical minded
chapter--- in a historical town"
The
Frederick Chapter, NSDAR, obtained its simple name in regard to honor the county, a
natural geographic crossroads, which was the scene of many struggles in our nation's
history. It was the second chapter to be organized in the State of Maryland and
thirty-third in the nation. The date was September 28, 1892.
Fourteen
ladies attended the organizational charter meeting over one hundred and ten years ago at
the home of Mrs. John Ritchie. Miss Eugenia Washington, Registrar General of the
NSDAR, represented National. Its founders were distinct leaders in the NSDAR.
Mrs. Betty Harrison Maulsby Ritchie served as the Chapter Regent. Others
followed her path as she was a dedicated and inspirational leader to her family and
community. One daughter, Mrs. Emily Nelson Ritchie McLean, a Frederick native,
became President General of the NSDAR from 1905 to 1908. This lady was elected an honorary
member of Frederick Chapter, the only one to have this honor.

The charter still exists as well as
other items of interest. The history of the chapter has been recorded in
several publications. With over a hundred years activity there have been many events
in which the chapter was involved. Many anniversaries have been observed.
There were many plaques dedicated to people and places of the historical area.
Trees were planted in memory of patriots and members. Flags were
presented. Bells were rung. Historical markers were placed. Graves
of patriots were located and marked. Graves of deceased members were marked with the
NSDAR insignia. The DAR schools saw support. Construction of Constitution Hall
was supported. Contributions to Maryland State were made. Two DAR Chapters
were sponsored in the area, Pleasant Plains of Damascus and Carrollton Manor. Essays
among the schools were conducted with the winners going on to State, some National.
Wreaths were laid at many ceremonies. Honors have been won at state and
national levels. There have been many traditional projects.
The
Frederick Chapter is proud of its accomplishments over the years in the historical area
and is inspired to continue the legacy left by its original fourteen ladies.
